HISTORY OF CLIFFWOOD INN
O
ceola Lodge, as Cliffwood Inn was originally called, a Colonial Revival style home, was designed by Arthur Rotch (1850-1894) of Rotch & Tilden Architects of Boston. He established the Rotch Traveling Scholarship - first architectural scholarship in the US and today the most prestigious award in architectural education. He lived five years in Europe as a child (1850-55) and again for seven years (1874-80), was a watercolorist of some renown and did some “improvements in the famed French chateau Chenonceaux.

Oceola Lodge was built for Mr. Edward McEvers Livingston and Sarah McAlpine Pollack Livingston in 1888-89. They were married November 15, 1882 at St. Stephens Church in Pittsfield, Mass. At the time of their marriage Edward was recorded as “of New York, NY, age 25, no occupation, 1st marriage, son of Edward L. Livingston and Mary J. Kernoohan” and Sarah “born Pittsfield, age 24, 1st marriage, occupation-at home, daughter of William Pollack and Susan M. R. Learned”. Their honeymoon was described “They will make a tour of the south for a time, and on the second of December will sail for Europe.”
